Ah, is there any food better than chocolate? If there is, I won't believe it. Chocolate is truly the universal, all-encompassing health food. It calms anxiety, helps women through tough times, sparks romance, and tastes like nothing else in this world. There is a saying which goes “Take away a woman’s chocolate and some say you take away her soul.” I think that saying is true for all of us.

box of chocolate Think of all of the benefits you get from eating a piece of chocolate candy. It is relaxing and calming. Chocolate can soothe our nerves and make us feel better. For some mistaken reason, this health food received a reputation for being a sinful indulgence. This isn't so. If you eat chocolate wisely, you can enjoy it without the guilty feelings normally associated with it.

According to recent scientific studies, dark chocolate has much of the same health benefits as vitamin C. It allows our bodies to use insulin more effectively, while also lowering blood pressure. According to the study, participants who enjoyed 100 grams of dark chocolate daily for fifteen days showed reduced blood pressure. They also were more sensitive to insulin than they were previously.

Scientists believe that the benefits of dark chocolate are because of the powerful flavonoids it contains. The research examined two out of three chocolate varieties, dark chocolate and white chocolate. Dark chocolate is made up of cocoa solids and sugar but no milk solids, which is prevalent in milk chocolate. These antioxidants are associated with the ability to lower the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancers. White chocolate showed no effect on patients since it is free of cocoa solids, where the flavonoids are found.

Antioxidants are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to health benefits of chocolate. It also promotes cardiovascular health. Much like red wine, the phenols found in dark chocolate prevent coronary diseases. A daily portion of 100 grams of dark chocolate reduces blood pressure and the occurrence of cardiovascular incidents by 21%. These phenols are also rich in antioxidants and neutralize free radicals produced by the body or absorbed from sources of pollution. Cocoa butter is already used in creams to heal scars and burns. It's easy to see why pharmaceutical companies are now exploring the possibility of researching with chocolate for the development of new medications.

Just because chocolate has health aspects does not mean we can load up our grocery carts with chocolate strawberries though. It is important to adhere to the daily-recommended dose since it is high in calories. Moderation is a key factor here. Balance your caloric intake with a variety of other heart-healthy foods and reach for the dark chocolate as a cure for your sweet tooth sparingly.
